Tantra Education Center that Inspired the Indian Parliament Building

You might have heard about Nalanda University, but have you ever come across a tantric university? Today, we’re sharing intriguing information about one. Around 35 kilometers from Morena district in Madhya Pradesh lies the Chausath Yogini Temple. This isn’t just any temple; its unique design speaks volumes. Built approximately 1000 years ago, the temple stands 100 feet above ground. It is circular and has 64 rooms, each housing a Shiva Lingam and a statue of a Yogini, giving the temple its name, Chausath Yogini, which means “Sixty-Four Yoginis.” Also known as the Ekateshwar Mahadev Temple, its architectural influence is so significant that the design of India’s Parliament House is believed to be inspired by it. It is said that this temple was once a center for tantric education, attracting practitioners from all over the world who sought to master the powers of the yoginis here. This is why it is often referred to as a university for tantrics.

Built in 1323 AD

The temple’s circular design and unique appearance were the brainchild of the Pratihara kings, who constructed it in 1323 AD. It features 64 rooms, each originally containing a Shiva Lingam and a statue of a Yogini. However, due to a lack of maintenance, many of these Lingams and statues have either been stolen or damaged. This architectural marvel rests on more than 100 pillars and is considered unique for housing 64 Shiva Lingams and a central sanctum. Practitioners of tantric arts come here seeking spiritual attainment, especially during festivals like Dussehra and Diwali.

Inspiration for the Indian Parliament Building

Foreign visitors to India were notably impressed by this temple, which led to the design of the Indian Parliament House in 1920 being modeled after the Chausath Yogini Temple in Mitawali. The resemblance between the two structures is striking. Declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Gupta-era Shiva temple in Mitawali is remarkable yet is fading into obscurity due to neglect and lack of proper maintenance by the government and responsible authorities. While Nalanda is world-famous for its ancient history, the Chausath Yogini Temple of Mitawali holds similar historical importance and deserves preservation.

Call to Action

To preserve this incredible piece of history, efforts must be made to maintain and protect the Chausath Yogini Temple. It stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural and architectural heritage and deserves to be recognized and cared for, just like Nalanda University.
