The Mythological Story of Pandupol Hanuman Temple… Where Bhima pride was shattered
Pandupol Hanuman Temple: Rajasthan’s Alwar district, also known as the Lion’s Gate, is famous throughout the country for its forts, lakes, heritage havelis, wildlife sanctuaries, and natural beauty. Located about 150 kilometers from Delhi and Jaipur, this district is not only known for its historical treasures but also for its religious and spiritual sites. Among these is the famous Pandupol Hanuman Temple, situated in the middle of the Sariska forests, about 55 kilometers from Alwar city.
This temple holds significant historical importance as its story is linked to the Mahabharata. According to legends, during the Pandavas’ exile, they passed through this forest while searching for water. When their path was blocked by dense hills, mighty Bhim struck the mountain with his gada (mace) and made a hole to create a passage. Since then, this place has been known as Pandupol.
The legends also tell that at this spot, Hanuman Ji appeared in the form of an old monkey and humbled Bhim’s arrogance. As Bhim walked through, he saw Hanuman Ji lying across the path. He asked the old monkey to move, but Hanuman Ji, pretending to be weak and old, asked Bhim to move his tail instead. Despite all his strength, Bhim couldn’t move the tail even a little. Realizing that this was no ordinary monkey, Bhim understood that it was indeed Hanuman Ji. Hanuman Ji then revealed his true divine form, and Bhim called the rest of the Pandavas to offer prayers to Hanuman Ji. They established a temple here, which today is famous as Pandupol Hanuman Mandir. The temple houses a reclining statue of Hanuman Ji, believed to date back to the Mahabharata period.
Pandupol Hanuman Mandir is not only a religious site but also a place of natural beauty and historical importance. Every Tuesday and Saturday, large numbers of devotees visit this temple. It is believed that offering prayers here brings relief from suffering and fulfills wishes. People often perform rituals like Sawamani (offering food) after their wishes are fulfilled.
According to the temple’s head priest, Babulal Sharma, the recent Pandupol Fair faced some issues with management, which caused difficulties for both domestic and international visitors. However, the annual fair remains one of the most popular events in Alwar, held every year on Bhado Shukla Paksha Ashtami, attracting thousands of devotees from across the country. It is said that a simple darshan (viewing) of Hanuman Ji in this temple is enough to fulfill one’s desires.
Situated near the Sariska Tiger Reserve, the temple also attracts many tourists who come to enjoy both the natural beauty and spiritual atmosphere. The Sariska Reserve remains closed for three months during the heavy rains, but once it reopens, tourists and pilgrims flock here to visit Hanuman Ji and seek blessings for happiness and prosperity. The Pandupol Fair held here is a major attraction, where people from various states come to participate in religious and cultural events.
The Pandupol Hanuman Mandir and its surroundings offer visitors a unique blend of nature, spirituality, and history. It is a site of deep religious significance and holds a special place in the cultural and historical heritage of Alwar.
